Get Golfing at Tuscany’s Best: The Castelfalfi Golf Club
While there are plenty of high-quality championship courses dotted around the legendary rolling hills of Tuscany, there are few that can rival Castelfalfi, the largest and one of the most popular in the region.
Tee Off at Castelfalfi
The club is set within the picturesque 2700-acre Castelfalfi Estate, and comprises the 18-hole Mountain Course, the 9-hole Lake Course and a driving range and practice area. In a landscape defined by its natural beauty, this extraordinary place offers challenges galore, but still provides something for golfers of every skill.
The Mountain
Opened in 1991, the 18 holes of this renowned course take you on a picturesque par 72 journey. Designed to follow the contours of the natural landscape, over 6351 metres you’ll play against the most beautiful backdrop of views as you tackle tricky water hazards and steepslopes. With a reputation as one of the country’s most exciting places to play,it attracts some of Europe’s biggest-name players.
The Lake
Opened in 2011 to complement the existing facilities, the adjoining 9-hole Lake Course takes in 3171 metres with equally spectacular views, and there are plans in place to extend it to 18holes in the future. While the Mountain is certainly longer, the Lake offers acomparable challenge in terms of its technical difficulty. Architects Rainer Preißmannand Moroder have set a benchmark for others, with their considered layout providing an opportunity for both beginners and highly skilled players.
Clubhouse and Other Facilities
Strategically located between the two courses, the clubhouse takes in sublime views over the landscape and is a delightful place to relax with a few drink post (or mid!) game. Along with abar and restaurant, there’s a great pro shop, locker rooms, an outdoor pool and expert tuition on hand.
The club’s top-class facilities arerounded out with a driving range, turf putting stations, three teeing greens, a short pitch area and a covered drive for regular clinics.
Sustainability in Practice
Castelfalfi was designed and built to uphold the principles of sustainability, and it is GEOcertified (Golf Environment Organisation), an aspect that certainly adds to theappeal for those with a social conscience. With as little disturbance aspossible to the natural surrounds, and using the existing vegetation andtopography as a start point, the architects have succeeded in creating 9400square metres of pure golfing pleasure – without the guilt.
There’s nodoubt this is one of the premier gems of golf in Tuscany and it’s amuch sought-after destination for both professional and amateur players. Howvery tempting…
