Beautiful Barbados

A look in to Barbados' golf culture!

Barbados Golf Club
The heart and soul of local golf in Barbados this course was opened in 2000 and was designed by Ron Kirby, co-designer of the Old Head of Kinsale, and since opening is the only 18 hole championship course that’s not attached to a resort on the island. With local shareholders and investment this semi-public course has become the home of most Barbadian golfers.

With it’s modest roots the course still has lots to boast about. In 11 years Barbados Golf Club has hosted two Caribbean Junior Championships, numerous Barbados Opens and is the focal point of the annual Sir Garry Sobers Festival of Golf.

Five Par 5’s, three of which are reachable, Barbados Golf Club gives a player many good scoring opportunities but the course fights back when players turn and play in to the wind on the last three holes of each side. The unique triple green between the 9th, 18th and practice green overlooking a small lake and river create quite a back drop for the 19th hole.

In the end that really is what this golf club is all about! Good golf, good people and a few local beers!

The Sir Garry Sobers Festival of Golf
Held annually in late April this tournament has become a marquis event in Caribbean golf. Attracting players from across the region, the UK and North America. Hosted by Sir Garfield Sobers this is a 72 hole stroke play tournament held over four courses in Barbados. With almost 300 players over 6 flights the competition is hard but “the lime s sweet”.

Competitors will move between Sandy Lane Country Club, Royal Westmoreland Golf Club, Apes Hill Club and Barbados Golf Club. These 4 courses provide one of the best rotors of golf in the Caribbean and the event combines this great golf with a unique group of people and a friendly atmosphere. Even if you don’t go home with any silverware it is hard not to enjoy yourself at the Sir Garry Sobers Festival of Golf in Barbados.

The other courses on the island all have their fair share of accolades as well.

Sandy Lane was host to the 2006 World Golf Championship World Cup won by Bernhard Langer and Marcel Siem. Royal Westmoreland was a fixture on the European Seniors Tour through the 2000’s and Apes Hill Club is the first overseas golf club to be affiliated with Wentworth.
