Favourite Weekend Golf Holiday Destinations ?
If you’ve only got time for a short holiday but you still want it to be a good one, a weekend golfing break in Belgium could be just the ticket. The country has been renowned for its golf for hundreds of years (even if it did look a little different back in the fourteenth century), so it’s built up an excellent infrastructure for keen golfers to take advantage of.
With a high concentration of excellent courses within driving distance of each other, spoilt for choice doesn’t even come close.
Superb Courses
There are around 30 clubs within a couple of hours of Brussels, in the region of Wallonia. You can take your pick, or try to squeeze in as many as you can – it’s totally up to you! But if you’ve only got a weekend to spare, you can get a bit of a head start with our recommendations (we’ll even take care of all the details for you).
Golf Club d’Hulencourt: The 18-hole Hulencourt was designed by Jean-Manuel Rossi and definitely benefits from some very thoughtful planning and on-going improvements. Set over some very picturesque undulating open parkland with carefully cultivated trees, the course includes numerous challenges to keep even the most skilled golfers on their toes. With a range of well-placed shallow bunkers and some tricky water hazards in the form of multiple small lakes, it’s a real pleasure to navigate the terrain.
Royal Waterloo, La Marache: Royal by name and royal by golfing standards, La Marache is the most favoured of Royal Waterloo’s two courses. A true institution in the local community, it was established in 1923 and is still widely considered one of Europe’s best inland courses. The lovely woodland and open parkland setting is the icing on the cake of this superb 18-hole course, which is a mixture of some quite tough approaches from the 11th onwards, and some lovely undulating terrain that allows for a challenging (but still relaxing) game.
Top Accommodation
If you’re warming to the idea of a weekend in Belgium, we can arrange a stay in a number of handpicked hotels and resorts, including the following two, which I highly recommend.
Martins Waterloo: This lovely boutique hotel has just 29 rooms and a lovely intimate ambience. While it’s in a convenient location for golfers (very close to numerous courses, including the two above) because it’s a little away from the centre of town it feels very relaxed and rural. It’s also superbly appointed, with lovely décor and all the facilities you need, including WiFi, a gym, a bar and an onsite restaurant.
Van der Valk Mons: Martins Waterloo puts you within easy access of the abovementioned courses plus a whole lot more. It is a modern and very comfortable hotel offering a range of rooms and suites to suit varying budgets and requirements. The onsite facilities are ideal for golfers and include WiFi, a fitness centre, a spa, a sauna, a lounge bar and a restaurant.
So, if you’re ready for your next weekend golfing break, consider Belgium! It’s only a short water obstacle away…
