Ciao Roma: Great Golfing Holidays in Rome
When the moon hits your eye like a nine iron on high that’s amore… Well, I may have changed the lyrics slightly, but I think a little bit of poetic license is in order when it comes to telling you about all the fabulous opportunities there are to play golf in Italy. From Sicily and Sardinia to Tuscany, Puglia and the Italian lakes region, there is no shortage of excellent luxury resorts and courses at your disposal all around the country.
One might not immediately consider Rome as a serious golfing destination, but the Sheraton Golf Parco de Medici Hotel& Resort puts paid to any doubts about that. I can highly recommend this absolutely charming resort for anyone looking to say buongiorno to a bit of golf in Italy.
The Resort
Sheraton Golf Parco de Medici Hotel & Resort is about 18km from the Rome airport and about 15km from the centreof the city, which means that if you want to mix it up a little with a spot ofshopping on Via Condotti, feel free! Having said that, from experience it’s pretty hard to drag yourself away from this wonderful resort.
The contemporary style hotel may berelatively new, but it’s unmistakably Italian. Surrounded by the 27-hole golfcourse, the expansive resort includes a main building as well as numerous villas and chalets. Despite its large size (it has 817 rooms), there’s a lovely ambience about the place that makes you feel like you’re staying somewhere much more intimate. Like I said – it’s bella Italia all the way.
Everything you need is on site, so you can spend all day out on the greens and come back to swim in the glorious outdoor pool and indulge in some fantastic aperitivo and dining options – eating al fresco here is magical during the day and evening. Ah, la dolce vita, you’ve got to love it!
The Course
You can be thinking about your game 24/7 while you’re staying here, because you’re literally surrounded by the greens. The sprawling parkland is dotted with pines, weeping willows and cypresses and it’sa truly calming and beautiful place to play.
Even though it’s relatively flat, there are still plenty of challenges across the 27 holes, which comprise of the shorter Red nine and the championship Blue-White nines. For novices or those looking to work on perfecting particular technical shots, the Red is ideal, while those who want to get out and make the most of the day will find the longer course pretty much has it all.
The layout includes some generous (and tricky) bunkers, lovely wide fairways and a smattering of ponds and smalllakes. Some of the more challenging holes are the par-3 15th and the par-4 9th and 18th, but there are certainly plenty of others that keep play interesting no matter what level you are.
The course has hosted numerous prestigious European events and tours, including the Italian Ladies Open – a testament to its quality.
For anyone looking to go on a holiday dedicated to playing golf in Italy, you’d be missing out if you didn’t put Golf Club Parco de Medici high on your list. And trust me, you won’t be wanting to ever say Arrivederci,Roma…
