Ayla: A Championship Course with Stellar Credentials
Set against the stunning backdrop of mountains in the port city of Aqaba, Ayla Golf Club is
the country’s first 18-hole championship course – and wow, what a place! It’s part of a
thriving development that’s sprung up in this region, which includes luxury accommodation,
shopping, entertainment and dining precincts. Ah, but we know what you’re here for, so let’s
get you tempted.
The Game
Designed by none other than the legendary Greg Norman, the 18-hole course includes a
well-facilitated Academy Clubhouse as well as a 9-hole executive practice site.
Super Stats
The Great White Shark has said that Ayla is among the top three courses in the world (if not
the top) in terms of sustainability and get ready to be impressed with its vital statistics:
Length: 6,540m
Par-72
5 teeing grounds per hole
Outdoor practice putting green
Practice course: 9-hole, par-27, 1,084m
Amenities
The aforementioned clubhouse has a huge range of amenities for all your golfing and leisure
needs. There’s a pro-shop and repair workshop, where you can hire or buy equipment, two
indoor swing studios to work on your technique, and the Silica bar/restaurant, where you can
stop for a snack or a substantial meal as you relax overlooking the magnificent fairways.
The Experience
The seafront layout of the impeccably maintained course offers a truly picturesque game and
it’s been designed to be sympathetic to the surrounding ecology. But it’s the technicality and
thought that’s gone into the 120 hectares of rolling greens and wide fairways where it
absolutely excels – with the pre-requisite, ‘something for everyone’.
With a heavy emphasis on water challenges at many of the holes, there are six ponds and
four lakes woven into the layout, while the presence of some large sand waste areas adds to
the technical obstacles. There’s a number of fairly demanding holes, and particularly of note
is the tricky 18th , which is played uphill and often against quite strong winds. Consider
yourself warned!
Mena Golf Tour
Chosen as part of the prestigious Mena Golf Tour in 2019, Ayla is set to shine again in 2020.
The tour encompasses the Middle East and North Africa and attracts some of the biggest
amateur and professional names in the sport.
The tour has revealed a new-look schedule, which includes Ayla for both the Qualifying
School in January, and the Journey to Jordan event, in February. They’ve condensed much
of the action for the tour into the first four months of the year, which means it’s going to be
an exciting time to be there in Jordan.
