Our Favourite Course Layouts in Provence

Barbaroux, Dolce Fregate, Servanes, Saint Baume Golf Club and Golf International de Pont Royal

Anyone with a genuine passion for the game knows that not all courses are created equal. That’s not to say that you can’t just get out on to any old patch of green and have a bash and a bit of fun, because you certainly can. But the beauty of golf is, you really do get out of it what you, ahem, ‘putt’ in. So the better the course, naturally, the better your game gets.

Awesome Golf Holidays: France
At A Golfing Experience we’ve had 30 years’ experience testing the world’s most challenging and prestigious courses and, dare we say, we’re quite partial to saying ‘oui’ to a tee - because when it comes to outstanding golf breaks, France has it all.

These are a few of our favourite French destinations in Provence to help get you up to par.

Barbaroux
If you’re looking to sneak away for an indulgent weekend (or week) in Provence, this 87-hectare course will challenge you with its technicality and charm you with its stunning natural setting. Like stats? Here’s one for you: Barbaroux is home to the largest green in Europe (69 metres). There are so many things to love about this Pete and PB Dye designed course, including the opportunity to navigate three lakes on one hole. The old cliché ‘something for everyone’ is overused in the industry, but in this case it rings absolutely true. No matter what your level, you’re going to have a game to remember.Tech know: 18-hole, Par 72

Dolce Fregate
Dolce Fregate is a fantastic place for groups and families, because not only do you get the chance to up your game overlooking the stunning Mediterranean Sea, there’s also plenty to keep the non-players happy in terms of outdoor and indoor activities. The resort offers the 9-hole, Par 29 Frégalon, for the beginners, and the outstanding 18-hole, Par 71 Frégate for those up for a challenge, both of which were designed by the renowned Ronald Fream. If you like your putting, driving and slicing with a side of breath-taking views, you’ll love this place. Eyes on the ball… Tip: Treat yourself to a lesson at the resort’s Golf Academy and you’re guaranteed some great results.

This 18-hole beauty is nestled into the foot of the Alpilles Mountains, so you’ll be playing surrounded by olive groves and cypress trees and traversing holes that take in lakes and sheltered fairways. Again, at times it might be hard to keep your eyes on the prize with all that natural beauty around you, but what a dilemma to have! Along with some excellent practice bunkers and a great driving range, one of the really good features of Servanes is that its position means it’s sheltered from the strong Mistral winds.

Saint Baume Golf Club
Looking for a bit of diversity in your divots? Well the 18-hole Saint Baume will have you shouting ‘fore’ as you traverse Robert Berthnet’s clever combination of water obstacles, technical tee-offs and raised greens, designed to suit whatever level of play you’re at. Set at the foot of the Sainte Baume Massif, the gorgeous surrounds of pine trees, lush fairways and charming Provencal views is bound to do great things for your par. Practice makes perfect: There are 40 practice bays (30 of them undercover) so even beginners can be putting like a pro in no time.

Golf International de Pont Royal
If you want to show off your chops on a course designed by a legend, the stamp of the king himself, Severiano Ballesteros, is everywhere at the immaculately maintained Pont Royal. Whatever your level or aspirations, you can’t help but be inspired by this place. The 6-hole La Durance is purpose built for newbies, with a driving range, chipping greens and a dedicated short game (3-hole) Pitch and Putt. While if you’ve got stars in your eyes and a spring in your slice, the 18-hole course is a testament to Seve’s skill and imagination, combining strategy, style and technical difficulty to the max.
A game to remember: Look forward to the par 3 Hole #11 as you cross a ravine against views of the Apilles Mountains. We won’t spoil the rest of it for you…
