The beautiful Bordeaux region in France not only has wonderful food, wine, culture and history – it has a range of fabulous golf courses as well!
When it comes to food, fashion, film and wine, nobody does it quite like the French. They’ve got a little something extra up their sleeves as well: it’s a fantastic place to go for a dedicated golfing holiday.
Close enough for a minibreak, yet far enough away to feel like you’re actually getting away, the Bordeaux region of France is one of our most popular A Golfing Experience destinations – and there’s a host of very good reasons why.
Bordeaux: History, Nature, Culture and… Golf!
There’s no shortage of history and culture in Bordeaux and the stunning landscape provides a peaceful and picturesque holiday escape. However, let’s face it: if you’re reading this you’re all about the golf, aren’t you? Rest assured, you won’t be disappointed.
Blessed with a pleasant climate pretty much all year round, the golf courses of Bordeaux set you in some of the loveliest countryside in France. All of them have their own unique attributes, and from a base in Bordeaux you can go from playing on courses that take in stunning pristine coastline, to those set in the lush, rolling hills dotted with vineyards.
The area is divided into four different regions:
• Bordeaux
• Le Médoc
• Saint-Emilion et la Vallée de la Dordogne
• Bassin d’Arcachon
There are eleven courses spread around the region, so no matter what your par you’ll be spoilt for choice. If you’ve got a hire car you can plan to play a few different ones over a long weekend, or a week if you’re lucky. A few of the best ones are:
Golf du Médoc – A choice of two par 71, 18-hole courses with surprisingly different personalities. One of them, Les Châteaux, has hosted both the French Open and the French Seniors Open.
Bordeaux Lac – Again, two courses from which to choose. La Jalle is pretty relaxed and great for novices, while Les Etangs offers a few more challenges for the serious players.
Margaux: Billed as one of the most challenging in the region due in part to its shorter greens, Margaux enjoys a bucolic woodland setting. Eyes on the ball…
Lacanau Ocean: Beauty and brains abound in this challenging technical course just a putt away from the Atlantic Ocean. The water hazards and tricky fairways make this a favourite.
