Highlights of a Golf Holiday on the Costa Blanca
Escape to Costa Blanca
With more than 20 clubs dotted around Costa Blanca, it’s not hard to see why it’s so popular with Brits looking to escape the dreary UK for a place that seems eternally blessed with sunshine. Even when it’s winter back home you can expect temperatures of about 17-20 degrees Celsius, which makes for absolutely ideal conditions to spend long days working on your handicap.
A Region With History
It’s not only the weather that’s turned this region into a favourite destination for golf holidays. Spain has long been associated with golf and Costa Blanca’s own heritage of the game dates back to the early seventies, when the establishment of the Villamartin course set the precedent for what was to come. This venerated course has seen many of the game’s top international names take on each other for the top mantle, with Torrance, Woosnam and Olazábal just a few that come to mind.
What’s Your Flavour?
Because of the number and diversity of courses on offer, everyone from the squeaky new novices to the semi-pros and top-level professional players will find great enjoyment and fulfilment here. Many of the courses were originally designed in consultation with some very famous players, including two of the biggest, Jack Nicklaus and Seve Ballesteros.
Another benefit is that they are within
extremely close proximity to each other, so depending on the length of time
you’ve got, you can test out several and then decide on your favourite.
Apart from Villamartin, some of the others include:
- Alicante – 72-par course designed by Ballesteros and has some superb water obstacles if you’re up for a challenge.
- Bonalba – Lovely wide fairways and a nice relaxing game.
- Club de Campo del Mediterráneo – Stunning setting in the mountains and the home of Sergio Garcia.
- Las Ramblas – Up for a challenge? Give it a go!
- Parador de El Saler – Designed by Javier Arana and set on the edge of the Mediterranean.
Aside from the vast range of opportunities on the greens, there’s lots of choice for anyone who’s bringing along their other half or the rest of the family on their golf holidays. Spain turns on the charm in this region, with a host of other things to see and do apart from getting out on the course (notice we didn’t say ‘better than’). Many of the luxury resorts have onsite spa and wellness centres, along with tennis courts, swimming pools, gyms and all the other modern accoutrements.
There are also multiple themed parks to keep the younger visitors entertained, as well as some excellent museums, galleries and other cultural and historical attractions. Oh, and then there’s the small matter of those beaches…
