Visit Vilnius for a Cultural Golfing Holiday in Lithuania
The UNESCO-listed Lithuanian town of Vilnius might not be the first place you’d consider for a golfing holiday, but we’re here to tell you definitely need to add it to your list! The opportunities to get your golf on in Lithuania are not necessarily huge, but they’re good quality – and if you’re looking for somewhere to experience not just a good game or two, but a whole lot of interesting culture as well, you’ve found it!
Visit Vilnius for Golf and Culture
The history of Vilnius is written all over its charming cobbled streets and it’s not hard to immerse yourself in the culture for an afternoon or two – if you can drag yourself off the greens that is.
In the UNESCO-listed Old Town, you can wander the curving streets and take in a wealth of churches and other historical architecture. Important sites include the University, Cathedral Square, Vokieciu Street, the Presidential Palace, St. Anne and Bernardine’s Church Complex, the Gates of Dawn and the Hill of Three Crosses. If you’ve got any energy left that you’re not saving for the next day’s game, walk to the top of the hill to explore the remains of Gediminas Castle – one of the country’s most famous landmarks.
To round out your taste of culture, make sure you sample the hearty traditional cuisine, which comprises lots of delicious potato and meat based dishes with creamy sauces, accompanied by the local mead. Then factor in a few more rounds to satisfy your conscience…
Enjoy the Golf
You’ll have a number of good courses at your disposal on a golfing break in Vilnius, all offering picturesque scenery as you play and the opportunity to challenge yourself as much or as little as you like.
The Capitals is a par 71 course set over 150 beautiful hectares. Designed by Peter Chamberlain, it’s the country’s first championship course and includes eight lakes and a generous number of bunkers to keep you on your toes. The landscape is a mixture of woody areas and gently rolling hills, and offers delightful views as you play through the 18 holes.
The 18-hole, par 72 European Centre is exactly what it says on the tin: located in the declared geographical centre of Europe! Set around the tranquil Lake Girija, the 6,600 metres are played through slightly undulating fairways and around natural ponds, parks and woodlands. It’s popular with the pros, as it offers quite a few challenges along the way, but it’s also designed to be comfortable for beginners.
V Golf Club Vilnius Grand Resort is an 18-hole, par 72 championship course set in a stunning 350 acres, comprising undulating hills, lakes and woodland. Designed by Bob Hunt, it’s the only PGA rated course in the Baltics and is considered the number one course in Lithuania.
So if you’re looking for somewhere a little different for your next golf break, why not consider Vilnius? Not only will you have the opportunity to work on your handicap on some excellent courses, you’ll be able to experience a very different kind of culture. Two holidays in one!
