Stay Play & Watch

A short history of our trip to Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship 2022

Flights –Our Etihad flight was on time, very  smooth and a very short 6 hours. The bonus was we could watch live golf on the Etihad flight which really got us in the mood. Economy was fine with 23kgs of luggage and free golf club carriage. Check in online was simple but the added  paperwork for  the verify app would be difficult for some. On arrival the testing was very straight forward and we were soon in our transfer to the hotel.

Hotel - The transfer to W Hotel Yas Island was simple. 15 minutes and the first time you see the iconic W hotel building it is quite impressive with the F1 track running through it. The rooms are very generous and all have balconies. I was facing the marina but others had views of the racetrack. The rooms are large and idea for golfers with bags and clubs. We went to the W rooftop bar and watched the racing which was great entertainment. Drink prices were what you would expect at a 5* hotel and room service was prompt. Breakfast was an extensive buffet and the staff were very pleasant. Dinner at the hotel was on the terrace and excellent where we had freshly caught  fish and chips. Checkout was smooth and the staff were friendly.

Abu Dhabi Golf Club & Westin Hotel – This is an excellent place to base yourself for a resort style golf break in Abu Dhabi. The new owners have a strong vision and have already identified some places to make improvements and are spending serious effort to improve the facilities including course and hotel. Paddle tennis courts are next to be added. There is a great grass driving range ideal for Pro groups. I think the garden rooms were quite nice and several rooms have golf course views. The lunch here was very good and the kitchen & lounge areas looked very nice too. The iconic view of the clubhouse and fantastic layout makes this a great way to start your golf tour.

Transfer back to Yas Island Bay, Hilton Yas Island a new feature hotel with access to a beach club and nightlife area. The rooms here are high standard and the service is very pleasant. Breakfast and dinner is a great combination of international and local tastes. There are several outside areas to sit, relax  and have a drink in the shade by the pool area.

Golf & Louvre – Golf at Saadiyat Beach has the 'wow factor' and immediately makes you feel like you are playing in the desert. The links course has some outstanding views and has several holes along the brilliant pure white sand beaches. The clubhouse has great facilities and a nice terrace where golfers sat to have a drink post round. The Saadiyat area  has some great luxury beach hotels where turtles  come to lay there eggs at certain times of year. We visited the Rotana (on our website) & the Park Hyatt. The are larger resort hotels but a very nice location and with beach bars similar to those in Costa Navarino, Greece. There is also a Nixos Palace here which has an all inclusive option.

The Louvre museum was a great stop on the way back to Yas Island the building itself was an  incredible dome set over water. Well worth a visit. If you want more golf more this time at night  9 holes under floodlights then the new Yas Acres golf and country Club is the place to go. After some adjustment to the lights I really enjoyed this experience. It is cooler and quite relaxing fairways are generously wide.

The big one. I was very nervous on the tee at the Yas Links Championship course but recovered enough to enjoy the course. Having the backdrop of the grandstand made this quite an experience. The course is very long and its important to play from the right tees. The clubhouse is fantastic in a Spanish style décor. The terrace would normally overlook the 9th & 18th holes but still looks great to know its where the players where based a few days earlier.

For the full Yas Island Experience there is Ferrari World and  Warner Brother studios in this area if you have enough energy. Alternatively their is a slower paced option  to go visit the pool at the Hilton beach club and reflect on a superb stay.

Finally we had one last pit stop at the Crown Plaza for dinner. This is a 4 * option close to the Yas Island golf course and part a complex of 3 hotels. There is a FB/HB option here for UK market and soon to be a dine around with all 23 restaurants. This is where the caddies stay and is great value.

Pretty basic but clean and well run

Peter T

An excellent venue and fully equipped for any size of golfing group. Rooms were really spacious and clean. Dinner was very good considering they were catering for multiple groups. Wine choices very reasonable. the main bar was well staffed and our group had an excellent evening watching the masters on the big screen tvs. very good value ('1 in 12 goes free') and 20% discount on all drinks. the whole set up is very impressive compared with many others. We will be coming again. April 24
