Women & Golf Bermuda Trophy 2015
The week always starts with a fun Texas Scramble event to enable players to get to know each other, for many this was their first opportunity to get to grips with the challenging Port Royal Golf Course. The winning team was made up entirely of players playing the course for the first time, Susan MacVicar (Nairn), Emma Duckworth (Knebworth), Kate Gregory (High Post) and Karen Lewis (Hintlesham Hall) had no difficulty in taming Port Royal scoring an amazing 4 under par gross score with 5 birdies on the card.
Day 1 of the championship brought near perfect weather conditions, Anita Tullett from Langley Park posted an early lead with 35 points but was pipped for the first round lead by Jan Scott of Kingswood with 36.
After a well-deserved day off round 2 got underway the wind had picked up and provided some tricky playing conditions, particularly on the huge and fast Port Royal greens. Susan MacVicar from Nairn, perhaps no stranger to windy conditions, carded a more than respectable 32 points to elevate her to joint 2nd with Shirley Darrah from Aspley Guise who also had 32 points. An exceptionally fine score of 36 points saw Ailsa Fraser of the Army Club leapfrog her way to a one point lead going in to the final round.
With all to play for conditions were once again ideal, after 9 holes Susan MacVicar led by a point and with Ailsa a further 3 points behind after the 13th hole it looked like the Scot had it in the bag however Ailsa played a magnificent final 5 holes making 2 birdies, including one at the 14th , the hardest hole on the course, to amass 13 points and snatch victory by 2 points from Susan. Kate Gregory from Highpost came in in third place with a final round of 35 points, with Kjersti Simonsen from Norway, Shirley Darrah and Jan Scott in a tie for fourth.
Ailsa won the tournament in 2013 and was runner-up in 2014 so she certainly has tamed Port Royal, as well as wining the coveted Women & Golf Bermuda Trophy she received a beautiful Etiqus timepiece and a pair of G4 shoes. Speaking about her week Ailsa said “I am thrilled to have won the tournament again, this year the opposition was tough and it was so close going in to the final round. It was good to have so many new players, it’s a great trip with some really good people to a fabulous island.”
As well as the 54 hole event the competitors took part in some fun team formats, Susan MacVicar and Karen Lewis won the Bermuda Blind Date Pairs. The last day team event was won by Rachael Paul (The Bristol), Marie Ellis (Frinton), Mary Dolman (Saltford) and Annette Smith (Haydock Park).
The prizes were presented by Alex Madeiros, Director of Golf at Port Royal, “ we are honoured to host the Women & Golf Bermuda Trophy, all of the ladies are such fun to be around and they play some great golf.”
As well as enjoying the golf, all of the competitors enjoyed some sightseeing on the island and a bit of retail therapy! Mary Dolman from Saltford celebrated her birthday during the week and also a trip down memory lane, May first came to the island in 1969 as a young bride and went on to work as a nurse, she stayed on the island until 1984 and in her final few years she was the private nurse to Sir Henry Tucker, Bermuda’s first prime minister.
As usual all of the competitors were looked after so well by the wonderful staff at Pompano Beach Club and Port Royal Golf Club, a huge than you to all of them and to our wonderful sponsors, Etiqus, GFore, Olverum, Srixon, Goslings Rum and the Bermuda Tourist Authority – we will be back!
